Mercedes Schlapp, the White House strategy director for communications has a challenging job. As White House's Strategist Communications Advisor Schlapp faces a myriad of challenges. The president is his own communications director. There are numerous legal matters that may affect messaging strategies. And Cabinet Secretaries who are embroiled in their respective controversies. Schlapp is able to keep her eye on the ball through the entire process, collaborating closely White House policy and political teams, as well as legislative affairs team and shops. In her current role she's focused on several concerns, such as school safety and opioids. She does not interact much with the media in her role. Her attention in March was when her name appeared as one of the potential candidates to succeed Hope Hicks. Mercedes Schlapp does not have an easy job as White House strategic communication adviser. It's not an easy task for Mercedes Schlapp to be the White House's strategic communications adviser. She's faced with a myriad of challenges, including as a President who also serves as his communication director. Schlapp is keeping her eyes on the target, and has been coordinating policy implementation together with White House staff from the department of legislative and political affairs and the policy shop, in addition to broader communication. The focus has been on issues like school safety, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. In her current position the director does not interact too much with journalists. In March, she was the subject of a sudden surge in attention, when it became known that Schlapp would be the next candidate to fill Hope Hicks's position as the director of communications. The battle has been brutal. Schlapp was a ally of Tony Sayegh. He was running for office. The two began fighting in the media. Schlapp called Sayegh after The Washington Examiner printed a bad story on him.
